EV101 - Feature

PORSCHE TAYCAN

Overseas model shown

More than just an electric vehicle, the 2021 Porsche Taycan aims to be the next chapter in Porsche's sports car lineage. The 2021 Porsche Taycan is a truly innovative electric vehicle, showcasing the high-performance potential of the species. As the first production EV with an 800-volt architecture and a multispeed transaxle sets new benchmarks in charging speeds and acceleration times.

The Taycan has a three-model range, with some familiar Porsche identifiers: Taycan 4S, Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S. All are all-wheel drive, but none are actually turbocharged.

Just some of the standard equipment offered includes 14-way seats with memory package, heated and ventilated front seats, heated multifunction sport steering wheel, Bose surround-sound system, digital radio and wireless Apple CarPlay. Higher grades naturally gain a lot more standard gear and there are a bunch of options packages for lighting, interior trim and more. Some features – like a head-up display –should be standard.

The Taycan is yet to be crash tested by ANCAP. It has, however, received a five-star rating from Euro NCAP. From the 4S up, standard safety gear includes a suite of airbags with side airbags in the rear, adaptive cruise control, lane-change assist, lane-keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, and an ‘active bonnet’ to minimise injury to pedestrians in a collision.

Taycan S

The Taycan 4s is the starting point for the Taycan range, it is uncompromising and perfect for the everyday. Striking proportions, timeless and instantly recognisable design. With a spacious interior and two luggage compartments, providing comfort and convenience for four.

The Porsche Taycan 4S initially, priced from $190,400. This is cheaper than the Porsche Panamera and 911 by a considerable margin.

As the name suggests, the Taycan 4S utilises all four wheels for drive, has a 79.2kWh battery pack that provides up to 320kW and 640Nm, and can add 70kW to the total power when Launch Control is activated.

The Taycan 4S accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.0 seconds, Porsche claims, but doing so repeatedly is likely to put a dent in the claimed 408km maximum range. Porsche says 335km is the minimum range you can expect from a Taycan 4S.

The Taycan 4S's options include Porsche’s Performance Battery Plus for $11,590, which brings a larger 93.4kWh battery capable of higher outputs (360kW and 650Nm, with a 420kW Launch Control boost) and a slightly longer range (389-464km).

Taycan Turbo

The Porsche Taycan Turbo is priced from $276,300 + on-road costs

As the name suggests, the Taycan turbo also utilises all four wheels for drive, has a 93.4Wh battery pack that provides up to 450W and 860Nm, and can add 40kW to the total power when Launch Control is activated.

The Taycan Turbo accelerates from 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds, Porsche claims, but doing so repeatedly is likely to put a dent in the claimed 408km maximum range. Porsche states 420km is the minimum range you can expect from a Taycan Turbo but I would suggest it will be around 20% less in the real world especially when driving on highways.

With regards to adding options, as you would expect, Porsches has a incredible amounts to choose from which will increase the price with each ticked box.

Taycan Turbo S

Porsche Taycan Turbo S is a silent assassin. It’s one of the fastest Porsches ever built, blitzing the 0-100km/h sprint significantly faster than its own claimed 2.8 seconds.

Powered by a pair of permanent magnet synchronous motors, the all-wheel-drive electric sedan generates an incredible 560kW of power and 1050Nm of torque.
