BYD is a Self-Sufficient Leader in the EV revolution

Updated: Feb 14, 2022

Haven’t heard of BYD, ( “Build Your Dreams ) well, the Chinese brand is globally one of the largest electric vehicle manufacturers in consumer and commercial/industrial electric vehicles.

Key points

  • BYD has rapidly growing global sales in electric passenger cars, trucks, and buses.

  • BYD stating their latest new platform enables ranges exceeding 1,000 km through the world’s first 8-in-1 electric powertrain and the first fast charging technology that enables a range of up to 150 km after a 5-minute charging

  • BYD is self-sufficient in manufacturing EVs, batteries as well as other expensive EV components.

  • BYD has been partnering with leading tech companies globally to develop autonomous cars, buses, and vans.

BYD has been quietly but rapidly scaling its manufacturing

The largest manufacturer of EVs has been quietly expanding its capacity to meet the growing demand for new EVs. Last year, BYD initiated the development of a manufacturing facility with a capacity to produce 400,000 EVs annually. Recently, the company announced plans for a new factory for EV batteries with an annual production capacity of 20 GWh in the city of Bengbu in Anhui province of China.

BYD NEW EVs SALES SOAR

The brand states it has sold 67,630 passenger vehicles in August, up 90.5% year-over-year and 18.7% month-over-month. Among which, the new EVs contributed 60,508 units representing an increase of 332% year-over-year.

BYD is self-sufficient on Batteries and EV technology

Battery development is a core function for BYD and the company is one of the largest rechargeable battery manufacturers in the world. For battery production, BYD has invested in fully automatic and highly precise production systems.

BYD makes more than just cars and batteries

Electric cars are just one part of the equation. BYD has been one of the leading manufacturers of electric buses. Over the years, the company has established manufacturing facilities worldwide, to cater to the growing demand for e-buses.

BYD launches E-PLATFORM 3.0 with the new concept car “ OCEAN-X”

BYD officially released the e-platform 3.0 for electric vehicles at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show, also debuting the X DREAM concept car and all-new EA1, while officially launching its super-hybrid flagship 2021 Tang DM-i.

Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD, said that the e-platform 3.0 is the cradle for the next generation of EVs.

The e-platform 3.0 is offering four major advantages: intelligence, efficiency, safety, and aesthetics. It not only further integrates and standardizes core components, but also builds a brand-new body structure, digital and electrical architecture, and a revamped BYD vehicle operating system.

Equipped with ultra-safe blade batteries integrated into the car body, the e-platform 3.0 builds up a special pure electric vehicle frame structure to increase the rigidity of the vehicle.

The new platform enables ranges exceeding 1,000 km through the world’s first 8-in-1 electric powertrain. In addition, the world’s first fast charging technology enables a range of up to 150 km after a 5-minute charging. The original designed direct cooling and heating system for batteries increases the thermal efficiency by up to 20% while reducing energy loss. Additionally, the heat pump system which can work at temperatures from -30℃ to 60℃, has increased the range by up to 20% in winter, since the system leverages the residual heat from surroundings, the powertrain, passenger compartment, and even the batteries. Finally, the brand-new electric AWD system features 0-100 km/h acceleration improved to 2.9 seconds, resulting in energy consumption compared to that of 2WD vehicles, while letting users enjoy the high performance of AWD EVs.

BYD coming to Australia?

With the brand already expanding into the lucrative European market, BYD is planning a multi-model attack for Australia. Chinese EV maker BYD is planning a full-frontal assault on Australia's EV market, with the brand to launch six new models by the end of 2023 – including SUVs, city cars, and even the popular ute, with hopes it will elevate them to a top brand in the Australian market. I’m sure this will shake up the EV market in more ways than one and no doubt will provide more opportunities for consumers to join the EV revolution.
