The Fuso eCanter marks a new era as the first production electric truck available in Australia. Its 100% electric platform ensures great efficiency, performance and reliability – with over 2-million kilometres of testing completed by the Daimler factory to ensure this truck meets and exceeds the highest standards. And like all Fuso trucks, safety comes as standard with AEBS and ESP, ABS, LDWS and pedestrian detection.
The Fuso eCanter has a Gross Vehicle Mass of 7.5 tonnes and the power comes from six liquid-cooled lithium ion batteries mounted in the eCanter frame store 82.8kW/h of electricity (with 66kW/h of usable power) and feed a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Power output is rated at 135kW and 390Nm of torque can be delivered the moment the accelerator pedal is pressed. DC Charging (up to 50kW) is also available with the eCanter. Using the CCS2 charge port the eCanter can be recharged to full battery capacity in 1 – 1.5 hrs. This type of charging would suit larger fleets with eCanters on busy run schedules in and out of depots multiple times a day.
One of its first customers will be Australia Post, which are said to add 20 Fuso eCanter electric trucks to its fleet, with the first arrivals said to be hitting the road in October. Australia Post has been forging ahead with the electrification of its fleet, mostly with electric trikes, and says it is the largest operator of electric vehicles in Australia,
This is a starting point for commercial vehicles and no doubt as battery technology improves with range, we’ll see the same transitioning which is occurring in the passenger vehicle market.
