New Smart #1 SUV available to order in December 2022

European customers will be able to reserve the all-new Smart #1 towards the end of this year, with the first 100 cars arriving in Launch Edition guise.

Smart has announced that order books will open for its new #1 electric SUV in December this year, with first deliveries scheduled for mid-2023. The launch of the Smart #1 marks the brand’s transition to an all-electric manufacturer, and the car has been developed under joint Daimler-Geely ownership. The first 100 #1s destined for the UK will be Launch Edition models, featuring bespoke design details inspired by the Concept #1 that debuted in Munich last year.

Like the show car, the Smart #1 Launch Edition is painted white with a contrasting gold roof, which also features a unique chequered pattern. The same graphics have been added to the 19-inch alloy wheels, and bespoke interior trim colours and two-tone leather upholstery distinguish the cabin of the special edition.

The most affordable #1 will be the Pro+ model, although the Launch Edition is based upon the range topping #1 Premium. As such, it comes equipped with matrix LED headlights, a 13-speaker Beats stereo, a wireless smartphone charging pad, adaptive cruise control, and an autonomous parking feature.

The new Smart #1 is based on an all-new electric architecture from Geely, called SEA. This will underpin Smart’s forthcoming new range, while the #1 also sets the template for the brand’s future design direction. Auto Express understands that all of the firm’s future cars will use the same ‘#’ numbered nomenclature, which will position its products chronologically rather than by size or sector.

From launch, the #1 is installed with a 66kWh battery, for a claimed headline range of up to 440km. It’s likely that more affordable, smaller battery options will be available in time, too.
