The enhanced 2022 Taycan: greater connectivity and more customization

The Porsche electric Taycan only arrived in Australia in late March, and become an instant success. So not resting on their laurels, Porsche has just released details of the 2022 Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo which is due to arrive across the globe towards the end of this year will feature several enhancements.

Key points

  • Technological enhancements

  • Integration of Android Auto in the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system

  • Remote Park Assist

  • New Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus options

  • Sales beat initial forecast

Technological enhancements

The thermal management and charging functions have also been further improved as part of a series of technological developments to further optimize the Taycan’s drivetrain. With the Turbo Charging Planner, the high-voltage battery can now be heated to a slightly higher temperature than before. This means that fast charging is possible earlier and at a higher charge level, further reducing the time it takes to charge.

Optional Remote Park Assist: remote control parking

It is possible to remotely control parking maneuvers via a smartphone when driving into and out of parking spaces without the driver needing to be behind the wheel. Automatic control is possible for both parallel and perpendicular ( 90 degree ) parking spaces and garages. The system automatically detects parking spaces and measures them using the vehicle’s ultrasonic sensors and camera systems. If there is enough space, the driver can start the parking process via the Porsche Connect app and then get out of the vehicle. The driver continuously monitors the parking process by pressing and holding a button on the smartphone’s app interface. The Remote Park Assist function independently takes over steering and control of the forward and reverse movements of the vehicle. If the button is released, the Taycan immediately stops the parking maneuver.

Android Auto: now also integrated into the infotainment system

Along with Apple CarPlay support for the iPhone, Android Auto is now also integrated in the Porsche Communication Management. This means that smartphones with the Google Android operating system are now also supported when plugged in via the USB-C port. Selected phone functions and smartphone apps can therefore now be operated via PCM 6.0 or the Google Assistant voice commands.

Cult colors make a comeback: even more individual paintwork

The Taycan is now also available with Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus in addition to 17 standard paint colors. The first option – Paint to Sample - offers a choice of 65 additional colors, at present. This includes the Moonlight Blue Metallic, Acid Green, Rubystar, Riviera Blue, and Viola Metallic colors that are so characteristic of Porsche. The second option, Paint to Sample Plus, gives customers almost complete freedom in their choice of color, even permitting them to match their Taycan to their favorite accessory.

And finally, it appears that Porsche is on a winner with the Taycan, they have reported an increase of global car sales during the second quarter of 2021 by 28% year-over-year to 81,670 and by 31% in the first half of the year to 153,656. Sales of the all-electric Porsche Taycan family increased by 248% year-over-year to a new quarterly record of 10,750. That's 13.2% of the total Porsche sales in the period. Taycan sales in the first half of the year stand at 19,822 (up 342% and 12.9% of the total volume), which indicates that the company will sell about 40,000 of Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo in 2021. One has to say, that is a great start to their EV journey, and no doubt, they are just getting started.
